Character Customization Guide - Season 10 Diablo 4

By RenataKane Updated: 2025/09/23

Character customization in Diablo 4 allows you to pick the overall look of your character. This guide will review all character customizations available in the Character Selection screens as well as discuss which of these customizations can be changed later. Note: Some choices are permanent!

Character Customization in Diablo 4
Character customization in Diablo 4 is far more robust than Diablos 1-3—admittedly not a high bar to get over. Diablo 1 and 2 only have one look for each Class, and Diablo 3 only has two looks per Class -- one male, one female. While Diablo Immortal has a more granular customization ability, such as the ability to tweak things like depth of forehead or chin point, these customizations feel a bit pointless, since your character's main "bubble" never changes from the default you chose.

Diablo 4 provides a better balance. You can choose male or female for any Class, with a mix of presets and customizations to define several traits. You can't choose or alter body type (nor can you in any of the Diablo expansions), but you do have quite a bit of control over the look. Plus, the look you have will show up anywhere you do, including in the impressive cinematics, which put you right into the middle of the action.

The first thing you'll pick is your Class and one of two available body types. From there, you go to Customizations.

Please note: Some features you pick now cannot be changed later! We have noted which appearance factors will be permanent and which features can be changed later using the Wardrobe feature.

Choose a Preset
For each class and body type, you will have the choice of four preset appearances. You can either Finalize there, or you can click Customize to define your look. We recommend picking Customize since this first section will determine those features you will not be able to change.

Choose Face and Body Options

Status: Permanent; cannot be changed in the Appearances section of the Wardrobe

Face Variations - You will be given 4 different Face Variations.

Skin Tones - There is a whole range of Skin Tones, and not just shades—there's also texture to consider. These can include features such as freckles, other markings, and vitiligo. Not all Skin Tones are available on one screen, so scroll down to see all options.

Eye Color - There are several different eye color possibilities, ranging from black to glowing shades on black sclera instead of white.

Hair Options

Status: Can be changed any time in the Appearances section of the Wardrobe

There are three things you can change with Hair Options:

Hair Style - There are over 20 different hairstyles; most are shared by all Classes, but 1-2 are unique to each Class.

Facial Hair - There are also 11 different options for Facial Hair. On male characters, this provides a range of mustaches, beards, and sideburns, including clean shaven. On female characters, this controls the thickness and shape of the eyebrows—or none at all if you prefer.

Hair Color - There are over 30 options for hair color, including several two-tone shades.

Accessories

Status: Can be changed any time in the Appearances section of the Wardrobe

Accessories covers four areas. The first option in all these categories shows nothing. To choose None in any category, select the first choice.

Makeup - These are 14 markings that appear only on the face, around the eyes.

Jewelry - This includes 33 combinations of ear piercings, ear cuffs, and nose jewelry. If you can't see the options well because of hair choices, you can go back one screen and pick a short style to see the choices better.*

Markings - Markings range from subtle to bold, and can cover the face, neck, arms, upper body, and/or back. You can choose None if you want.

Markings Color - There are many different colors for skin paint and tattoos depending on your preferences. The first Markings color (appears like a dark circle with an X through it) goes with whatever default color is assigned to that Marking.

*This does not control transdermal implants on Spiritborn. These are affected by armor choices.

Other Controls

Along the bottom of the screen, you will see options for Zoom, Show Armor, Randomize All, or ESC to Body Type.

Show Armor is particularly helpful when deciding on a look. This allows you to see what your choices would look like with typical armor for your class. This can be helpful with Markings choices.

Choices with Show Armor (E) Selected

Finalize
When your character is customized to your liking, choose Finalize.

If you have completed the Vessel of Hatred Campaign on one character, you'll have the option to start with Vessel of Hatred Campaign completed. If you do this, you'll never have the choice to replay the Campaign on this character.

If you do not have the VoH expansion, you can get the Skip Campaign option if you have completed at least the Prologue on one character (you do not need to complete the entire Diablo IV original campaign, although it's highly recommended if you're new to the game).

Gameplay Options also include:

Seasonal: If you wish to do Seasonal content, you should check this option. Players who don't want to do the Seasonal content can uncheck this and play only in the Eternal (non-seasonal) realm, but they will not have the option to play the Seasonal content if they do.

Hardcore: This is the permanent death option. If your character dies, you lose everything on that character and need to start over!

Last, you need to pick a name, and the good news is that you don't have to make it unique. You can pick anything you want up to 12 characters.

Changing Looks Using the Wardrobe
Near your Stash in all major cities, you'll find your Wardrobe. This is where you'll go to change your appearance options. You can change the following here:

Wardrobe

In the Wardrobe screen, you can change the look of all your Gear items, including any back cosmetics you may have earned or purchased. There are small icons in the corner of the item choices that show the sources:

No icon indicates an appearance learned by Salvaging. The leaf is earned from past and present Seasonal content. The deck of cards indicates items purchased from the Store, and the orange diamond in the upper corner indicates a new acquisition.

Here, you can change the look of your Armor, Items, Effects, and Pets. In addition, there are tabs to change your Stable looks and Appearance.

To select a new appearance for any item, just click on what you want to show. You can mix and match your outfits, saving your favorite looks by buying Ensemble slots for quick fashion changes.

On this screen, we're changing our Main Hand under Items. You will see what you already have selected for an appearance by the red border; from there, you can choose different looks. It will only apply an appearance change for the same type of weapon -- for example, this changes the appearance of a Two-Handed Axe, but it won't apply that look to a one-handed weapon or any other two-handed weapon such as a mace or polearm.

Once you have completed your selection, click the red return arrow in the upper right corner to exit this screen.

You can also apply dyes to your armor (not to your Items, which include both weapons and back cosmetics). Click the piece you want to change color, click the "Set Pigments" tab at the top, and then select a pigment from the selections at the bottom. If you wish to apply that pigment to all your armor items, simply hold down the left mouse button until the white circle fills and you'll dye all your armor pieces at once, for that pulled-together look.

Effects
Under Effects, you can select your chosen Headstone (what appears when you die), and Town Portals. These come primarily from Seasonal content or the Store. If you're Hardcore, the Headstone probably isn't that important to you, since it's something you never want to see.

Pets

Pets are small creatures that accompany you. Their job isn't just to look cute; pets are very useful because they'll pick up gold and crafting items for you! They will not pick up gear or quest items. You won't have a pet until you go to your wardrobe to select one.

Changing Stable Selections

While you can still change your mount, mount armor, and trophy through the Stablemasters, you can also do it through your Wardrobe! Coordinate your mount with your new outfit.

Changing Your Appearance

Under the Appearance tab, you can choose to change your Hair and Accessories. These use the same Hair and Accessories tabs as you have on the character creation, with one difference: the "Toggle" button on the bottom center. You can use this to toggle your helm on and off, or your entire set of armor if you're zoomed out. This allows you to check how hair, makeup, jewelry, and markings look with the entire ensemble.

You cannot change your selections that you made in the Character Creation for Face and Body options, such as facial type, skin tone, and eye color.
