Nikola Jokić (born February 19, 1995, Sombor, Serbia) is a Serbian professional basketball player who is one of the most versatile talents of his generation. Widely considered the best-passing center in the sport’s history, Jokić won three National Basketball Association (NBA) Most Valuable Player (MVP) awards (2021–22 and 2024) and led the Denver Nuggets to the 2023 NBA title.

Jokić was introduced to basketball by his two brothers, who were 11 and 13 years older than him. Although the youngest Jokić also developed an interest in competitive horse racing (a sport in which he would continue to dabble during future NBA offseasons), he took quickly to basketball and developed a playmaking skill set that belied his large size. At age 17 he moved to Belgrade to join the professional team KK Mega Basket of the Adriatic Basketball Association (ABA). Jokić spent his first season in Belgrade primarily playing for Mega Basket’s junior team and was named the junior league’s MVP. He moved on to the senior team the following year and showed enough promise that the Nuggets drafted him in the second round (41st overall selection) of the 2014 NBA draft. (Notably, ESPN did not show Jokić’s selection live during its draft broadcast; the pick was instead announced via an on-screen graphic while the channel was in a commercial break and airing a Taco Bell advertisement.)

The Nuggets selected Jokić with the intention of keeping him at Mega Basket for another year to gain more experience playing against lower-level professionals and to continue developing the basketball skills to compliment his sturdy, 6-foot 11-inch (2.1-metre), 280-pound (127-kg) frame. That decision proved to be a sound one, as he averaged 15.4 points and 9.2 rebounds per game en route to earning 2014–15 ABA MVP honors. The more-seasoned Jokić then joined the Nuggets for the 2015–16 NBA season. Like most second-round draft picks, Jokić was not widely expected to make an immediate impact in the top basketball league in the world. Instead he averaged 10.0 points and 7.0 rebounds per game and was one of five players selected for NBA First-Team All-Rookie honors. He steadily increased his playing time and statistical production over the next two seasons, and in 2017–18 he helped the Nuggets post the team’s first winning record in five seasons (46–36).

Jokić had a breakout during the 2018–19 season. He scored 20.1 points per game and pulled down 10.8 rebounds per contest to earn his first All-Star selection as Denver won a division title and advanced to the second round of the NBA playoffs. The team did even better the following season, losing to the eventual-champion Los Angeles Lakers in the Western Conference finals. Already a two-time All-Star, Jokić moved into rarefied air in 2020–21, as he averaged 26.4 points, 10.8 rebounds, and 8.3 assists per game to capture his first NBA MVP award. The improved Jokić was a nightmare for opponents, who had to defend against both his deft, seemingly physics-defying passes and his equally dangerous soft shooting touch. His 2021–22 season was, by some measures, a historic performance. Jokić had averages of 27.1 points, 13.8 rebounds, and 7.9 assists per game as he set a record for the highest single-season Player Efficiency Rating (an advanced statistic that expresses a player’s on-court efficiency as a single number) in NBA history and won a second consecutive league MVP. His splendid play, however, was not enough to push an injury-plagued Nuggets roster past the first round of the following postseason.

Jokić at last combined individual and team success in 2022–23. He once again put up MVP-caliber statistics (24.5 points on a career-high .632 shooting percentage) as he guided the Nuggets to the best record in the Western Conference (53–29). The team then lost just four games across four playoff series to win the NBA championship for the first time in franchise history. Jokić was named NBA finals MVP for his performance in Denver’s five-game series victory over the Miami Heat, in which he averaged 30.2 points, 14.0 rebounds, and 7.2 assists per game. Moreover, he recorded 10 triple-doubles over the course of the 2022–23 postseason, breaking Wilt Chamberlain’s previous record of seven that was set during the 1966–67 playoffs.

Jokić had another MVP season in 2023–24, averaging 26.4 points, 12.4 rebounds, and 9 assists per game. Backed by his strong play, the Nuggets again qualified for the playoffs.

Jokić was also a member of the Serbian men’s national basketball team. He helped Serbia win a silver medal at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro and played for his country in the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup as well as in the EuroBasket 2022 championship. He again joined the Serbian team in 2024 at the Paris Olympic Games. There he led all players in total points, rebounds, and assists en route to winning a bronze medal.
